Anniversaries are a good occasion to take a chance and pause in the here and now, to review one's own position and to use the retrospective to strengthen one's orientation towards the future. This is how we want to use the anniversary year 2023 for the Bavarian Memorial Foundation and share different perspectives of retrospection and preview with you on various occasions.

Since our foundation in 2003, the Concentration Camp Memorial Sites Dachau and Flossenbürg have been our central content and focus. In 2013, we took over additionally the responsibility for a total of 75 concentration camp cemeteries and gravesites in Bavaria. The purpose of our work is to upkeep:

- these memorial sites as witnesses to the crimes of National Socialism,

- as places of remembrance of the suffering of the victims

- and as places of learning for future generations.

Furthermore, it is our constant endeavour to support historical research and to contribute to keeping alive and passing on the knowledge about historical events - in the common task of "never again!”

Over the decades, millions of people from all over the world have visited the two Bavarian concentration camp memorial sites. There they have found a variety of qualified offers that support them in appropriately classifying and processing this experience. Exhibitions and diverse event formats are as much a part of the portfolio as the publication of scientific studies and other publications. In addition to an educational programme for school classes and intensive, international and multicultural youth work, it is above all the committed work of the contemporary witnesses whose lectures, interviews and books over the past decades have provided emotional access to the difficult topic for numerous (young) people.
