The memorial, installed in 1950, commemorates around 4,000 victims of National Socialist atrocities – mainly prisoners of the Dachau concentration camp and victims of “euthanasia” programmes from various killing centres. Twelve glass panels display the names of the 3,996 known victims from 17 countries – most of them from Poland. Ehrenhain I was redesigned as part of a col- laborative project between the Bavarian Memorial Foundation, the Foundation for Polish-German Reconciliation and the Polish Consulate General – with the aim of transforming the memori- al into an important place of remembrance and learning. The ceremonial event was opened by Karl Freller, Director of the Bavarian Memorial Foundation, followed by greetings from Polish State Secretary Jaros ł aw Sellin and Munich City Councillor Manuel Pretzl. State Minister Melanie Huml represented the state government. There were also contributions from Maria Kuzin, relative of the victim Father StanislawWegrzynowski, as well as Jewish and Christian clergy – including Archpriest Nikolai Artemoff, Regional Bishop Christian Kopp, Pastor Rafa ł Nowak, Rabbi Steven Langnas and Monsignor Dr Alexander Hoffmann.
