78   ALBUM 2022 | IMPRESSIONS 2022 ©Dachau Memorial ©Flossenbürg Memorial D e c e m b e r Ernst Grube’s 90th birthday On 13 December, Holocaust survivor and dedicated contemporary witness Ernst Grube marked his 90th birthday with a celebration at the Dachau Memorial. Grube has served as Chair- man of the Board of Trustees of the Bavarian Memorial Foundation since 2012 and is actively involved in remem- brance work at the Dachau Memorial, in Munich and within other institutions dedicated to memory culture. He has received numerous awards, most re- cently being named an honorary citizen of Munich in 2022. Ernst Grube was born in Munich in 1932. His father was a communist, and his mother was a Jew.When his father refused to divorce, the family’s three children were sent to a Jewish chil- dren’s home and were forced to wear the yellow Star of David from 1941. The mother and children were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp in February 1945. The whole family re- turned to Munich in August 1945. Grube later trained as a painter and became a vocational college teacher. He continues to share his moving story today. O c t o b e r Federal Minister Lambrecht visits Flossenbürg On 28 October, the Flossenbürg Memorial welcomed Christine Lambrecht (Federal Minister of Defence). At the invitation of the SPD district association of Neustadt an der Waldnaab and Member of Parliament Uli Grötsch, she visited the memorial and laid a wreath.
