FLOSSENBÜRG MEMORIAL | ALBUM 2022 75 A P R I L Anniversary of the liberation of Flossenbürg On 24 April, the Flossenbürg Memorial hosted a public ceremony for the first time since the start of the pandemic to mark the anniversary of the camp’s liberation. Around 600 guests, including six survivors and numerous relatives from around the world, gathered to remember the victims of the camp and celebrate their liberation. Speakers included Dr Günther Beckstein, Dr Rachel Salamander and Claudia Roth, State Minister of Culture, who emphasised the importance of freedom and – in light of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine – warned against the erosion of democratic values and diversity. The deliberate omission of the Russian and Belarusian flags served as a symbolic protest against the war, while the ceremony also paid tribute to the victims from these nations.
