64   ALBUM 2023 | IMPRESSIONS 2023 D E C E M B E R New memorial plaques in Surberg On 15 December, new memorial plaques were ceremonially unveiled in Surtal-Surberg near Traunstein to commemorate the massacre that took place there on 3 May 1945. On that day, SS guards shot and killed 61 concen- tration camp prisoners during a death march from Flossenbürg. There was only one survivor. The plaques are situ- ated at the entrance to the concentra- tion camp cemeteries and gravesites in Surtal, recounting the tragedy that occurred shortly before the end of the war and naming its victims. The following day, the present-day mu- nicipality of Surberg was liberated by American soldiers. For many years, the concentration camp cemeteries and gravesites – and with them the memory of the 1945 massacre – were largely forgotten. It was not until the 40th anniversary of the events in 1985 that a large central commemorative ceremony was held. An annual act of remembrance has taken place ever since. O C T O B E R Inaugural visit On 8 October, Israeli Consul Gen- eral Talya Lador-Fresher paid a first official visit to the Dachau Me- morial. Together with Vice Consul General Kasa Bainesay Harbor, she laid a wreath at the International Memorial in remembrance of the Jewish victims. The Dachau Memo- rial emphasised the importance of remembrance and its close solidarity with Israel. The visit took place amid heightened international tensions – just one day after the Hamas terror- ist attack on Israel on 7 October. ©Dachau Memorial ©Friedbert Mühldorfer
