ACT OF REMEMBRANCE AT THE PERLACHER FORST CEMETERY | ALBUM 2023 57 ©Bavarian Memorial Foundation J A N U A R Y Act of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism On 25 January, the Bavarian Memorial Foundation joined the Bavarian State Parliament in remembering the victims of National Socialism at the Perlacher Forst cemetery. This year’s event focused on concentration camp cemeteries and gravesites as places of remembrance and reflection. It highlighted the large number of Polish victims, as is particularly evident at Ehrenhain I in the Perlacher Forst cemetery in Munich. The ceremony included speeches by Ilse Aigner (President of the Bavarian State Parliament), Karl Freller (Director of the Bavarian Memorial Foundation), Dieter Reiter (Lord Mayor of Munich), and MagdalenaW ęż yk (great-granddaughter of a murdered Polish prisoner). Nearly 4,000 concentration camp and “euthanasia” victims from 17 European countries are buried at Ehrenhain I – more than half of them from Poland. The memorial was established in 1951 and redesigned in 2021. It is the third-largest concen- tration camp cemetery in Bavaria. Together with over 70 other concentration camp cemeteries and gravesites, it is main- tained by the Bavarian Memorial Foundation.
