38   ALBUM 2024 | ACT OF REMEMBRANCE AT THE BAVARIAN STATE PARLIAMENT 2024 J A N U A R Y Act of remembrance for the victims of National Socialism at the Bavarian State Parliament On 24 January, the Bavarian Memorial Foundation and Bavarian State Parliament came together for “Generations of Remembrance”, a commemorative event in memory of the victims of National Socialism. They addressed the issue of remembrance in a future without contemporary witnesses. Ilse Aigner (President of the Bavarian State Parliament) and Karl Freller (Director of the Bavarian Memorial Foundation) delivered powerful speeches warning of the negative and extremist developments we are currently observing in society. Drawing on the survivors’ enduring message of “Never again!” – inscribed on the International Memorial in Dachau – the present-day discourse has given rise to phrases such as “Never again is now!” and even “Never again is always”. Holocaust survivor Abba Naor also spoke as a contemporary witness, addressing the audience with a moving speech. A group of pupils from the Gisela-Gymnasium in Munich helped shape the act of remembrance with a performance on the topic of anti-Romani sentiment. The event was attended by survivors Ernst Grube and Franz, Duke of Bavaria, as well as the descendants of numerous other survivors. The annual commemoration of the victims of National Socialism was held at its traditional venue within the Maximilianeum palatial building following the reconstitution of the Bavarian State Parliament in the previous autumn.
