Looking back. Looking ahead. 2020-2025
INSTITUTIONS | SPEECHES 203 manipulation, deception and denial that give rise to destruc- tive political ideologies and stand in the way of reconciliation and justice. In remembrance and knowledge work, there must never be such thing as “enough is enough”. The photograph on today’s invitation card – and the Meeting Hub right beside us – make one thing perfectly clear: Remem- brance and knowledge arise from encounter. Remembrance and knowledge grow through interactions and exchanges. Remembrance and knowledge gain strength through en- counters across generations, institutions and diverse groups. Remembrance and knowledge require us to speak and listen, to show and observe. Remembrance and knowledge need com- munity, identification and special places of encounter to realise their true potential. If the partnership between the University of Regensburg and the Flossenbürg Memorial – whether in the physical or the digital world – brings together even more people of all ages, from all backgrounds and across all borders, and if all those people preserve memories, raise questions, build knowledge, share stories, and carry truth and knowledge forward into their own worlds, then ignorance will not stand a chance. And then, just as I experienced myself in that Ameri- can classroom fifty years ago, shared responsibility for remem- brance and genuine knowledge for the future will prevail. Thank you.
