20   ALBUM 2025 | FLOSSENBÜRG MEMORIAL 2025 A P R I L 80th anniversary of the liberation of Flossenbürg On 27 April 2025, more than 1,000 guests from over 20 coun- tries gathered to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Flossenbürg and honour the camp’s victims. The event was attended by six survivors and numerous family members. Following a welcome address by Prof. Jörg Skriebeleit (Direc- tor of the Flossenbürg Memorial), the act of remembrance featured speeches by Dr Markus Söder (Minister-President of Bavaria), Claudia Roth (Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media), Tobias Reiß (First Vice-President of the Bavarian State Parliament), Ji ř í Oberfalzer (Deputy Chair of the Czech Senate), Lena Gorelik (writer) and Karl Freller (Director of the Bavarian Memorial Foundation). The act of remembrance was followed by an interfaith cere- mony during which the remains of prisoners, recently recov- ered during construction work, were laid to rest in the “Valley of Death”. Anna Stolz, Minister of Education and Chair of the Foundation Council, honoured the deceased in a memorial speech. An interactive “Meeting Hub” was set up in the run-up to the event, allowing visitors to explore an exhibition of commemorative items and share their thoughts with others. This space also provided a platform for family members and other guests to present a range of personal belongings and musical tributes.
