MEMORIAL WORK IN BAVARIA   11 learning and exhibition opportunities at both the Dachau Memorial and the Flossenbürg Memorial, expanding   decentralised memorial sites, and maintaining and making   visible the concentration camp cemeteries and gravesites. A particular emphasis will be placed on collaborations with schools and civil society initiatives to ensure that future   generations fully appreciate the importance of remembrance. Remembrance is not a closed chapter. It is a duty and a calling. The Foundation sees itself as a bridge between the past and future, between the voices of survivors and the questions of the younger generation. With projects that bring history to life and create spaces   for encounter, we help keep remembrance alive – in Bavaria,   in Germany and throughout Europe. the victims, thereby exemplifying how regional remembrance culture can be improved through close cooperation between the Foundation, local authorities and civil society – a model that is already being adopted in many regions of Bavaria. One significant milestone was the redesign of Ehrenhain I at the Perlacher Forst cemetery, which was officially inaugurated on 1 September 2021. The ceremony was attended by repre- sentatives from a number of consulates. Twelve name panels now commemorate around 4,000 previously unnamed victims, complemented by additional plaques providing information on the history of the site. Alongside this educational work, the care and upkeep of the concentration camp cemeteries and gravesites is becoming increasingly important. Many of these sites were established around 1950 and now require extensive restoration to preserve their dignity and impact. In recent years, major restoration projects have been carried out in places such as Wetterfeld, Surberg and Eging am See.
